Linux Foundation ONS Europe 2018 session slides

I mentioned previously that our talk was accepted for The Linux Foundation Open Networking Summit Europe (ONS) 2018.

ONS brings together business and technical leaders across enterprise, cloud and service providers to share learnings, highlight innovation and discuss the future of open networking and orchestration. ONS Europe will feature 3 days of sessions, including project-based technical sessions, tutorials, workshops, keynotes and more.

Last week my co-presenter and I hosted a little over 30 attendees for a talk around pitfalls everyone should avoid with hybrid multicloud.

As part of the session a lively discussion was setup through the attendee participation in live polling, spread throughout the presentation slides.

To share the results of their polling, we've updated the slides to include a results slide after each poll question, allowing those who missed the session to see how things shake out.

Check out the slides below:

Evangelist traveller tales - Retiring my old friend

I've been on the road for a long time now for my employer, going on 10 years believe it or not, but it's finally time to retire my old friend.

It's been an amazing ride so far, with trips to almost all corners of this planet. I've met incredible people, spoken to fantastic groups, ate weird to amazing foods, and shopped in the strangest of cultures.

My old friend has been with me most of the way, keeping me company through the rough and tumble life it's been forces to endure. I can't even count the number of miles my old friend has covered, but it's really time to retire.

My old friend has started to limp a bit which makes the long treks from parking lots to terminals painful. Not only that, she's having trouble keeping up with me as we navigate hotel lobbies, airport hallways and rental car parking lots.

It's gotten worse over the last few months.

Red Hat Partner Community Meetup in the Netherlands

While most of what I talk about here is related to open source technologies that reside in the solution portfolio of Red Hat, I'd like to think it's because working with good technology is why you read this content.

This article is a bit of a plug for something directly related to the business of working with Red Hat technologies and customers. It's about partnering with Red Hat as an organization to further expand your reach and provide your developers / consultants / architects with the chance to work with all of these open source technologies.

Last week, I was invited to present for the Red Hat Partner Community Meetup in the Netherlands. This is a very unique group of companies known as Premier Partners that can deliver IT services for customers using open source technologies supported by Red Hat.

My talk was about giving these partners a preview on the application development product portfolio, such as what is coming, timelines and what's driving future direction in the products. Here's a peek at the lead slide, as unless you were in attendance, that's all you're going to get.

The question you might be asking yourself is, "How can I get in on sessions like this?"

That's not as hard as you think, but it does involve you getting in touch about the depth of collaboration with Red Hat, how to get your companies services mentioned, and how to accelerate your open source solutions.

Hope to welcome you and your teams soon as Red Hat Partners!

All Things Open 2018 - 10 Steps to Cloud Happiness

As previously mentioned, I'm a big fan of the All Things Open conference.

This year it's in Raleigh, North Carolina from Oct 21-23 and I submitted a few talks to make sure I would be there.

The talks ranged in topics from cloud application development, ensuring success on your open source journey, jump starting a career in open source, to emerging technologies.

Low an behold, the following talk was accepted and I'll get to meet all the great attendees in North Carolina soon.

Shift Developer Conference 2018 - How to Jump Start a Career in Open Source (video)

As previously posted, I spent this week at the largest developer conference in Southeast Europe, known as the Shift Developer Conference 2018.

I gave a talk on the soft skill side of development, suggesting some ways to jump start a career in open source. I did not mention coding, pull requests or even suggest to join a coding project. It's more subtle than the obvious components one would expect in such a topic.

My career in open source has been a long one and I think I've got a few good tips, tricks and pieces of advice based on what's worked on this long and wonderful journey.

After the event slides were posted. The only item missing was the on-site video recording of my session. The organizers posted that today, so here you go.

3 Pitfalls Everyone Should Avoid with Hybrid Multicloud (Part 4)

The daily cloud hype is all around you, yet there are three pitfalls everyone should avoid.

From cloud, hybrid cloud, to hybrid multicloud, you’re told this is the way to ensure a digital future for your business. These choices you’ve got to make don’t preclude the daily work of enhancing your customer's experience and agile delivery of those applications.

Let's take a journey, looking closely at what hybrid multicloud means for your business. Let's examine the decisions being made when delivering applications and dealing with legacy applications. Likely these are some of the most important resources to your business.

This article highlights three pitfalls everyone should be aware of when transitioning into hybrid multicloud environments. It's based on experiences from interactions with organizations working to conquer hybrid multicloud while delivering their solutions.

In part one, we covered the basic definitions to level the playing field. We outlined our views on hybrid cloud and multicloud, making sure to show the dividing lines between the two. This set the stage for part two, where the first pitfall discussed why cost is not always the obvious motivator for moving in to the cloud. Determining if moving all workloads in to the cloud is viable was explored in part three.

Finally, in part four we look at what to do with your data in the cloud. Should you move data in to the cloud? How much? What data in the cloud works and what is too much of a rick for the cloud?

3 Pitfalls Everyone Should Avoid with Hybrid Multicloud (Part 3)
