PromCon EU 2024: Meet the New Kid in the Sandbox - Integrating Perses Visualization with Prometheus (slides + video)

Today I shared an update on the Perses dashboard and visualization project, the newest member of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) Sandbox tier.

It was at PromCon EU 2024 in Berlin, Germany and I shared about how far along Perses is, including how easily you can start integrating it with the Prometheus monitoring system today.

I've been attending this event for the last two years since my career took me in the direction of cloud native observability, with CNCF projects like Prometheus being the natural direction I gravitated towards. Since working with Prometheus, I've also gotten involved with Perses, which is focused on providing true open source visualization and dashboards to the users of Prometheus.

2023 Year in Review - Observability around the World

Deep into the winter of 2023 and counting down the last hours, I find myself working on this last task of the year. It's that time where one steps back and reflects on the past year of activities and travels.

This is also always one of the easiest articles to write, going back now since this blog started, meaning I've been doing them over 18 years now. Who would have imagined back in 2005 when I started publishing articles for this blog that I'd be at it 18 years later and have garnered almost 2.6 million views?

It takes a bit of research every year to get this article done, as I've been traveling, speaking, publishing, socializing, and generating so much content throughout the year. It's always fun to see all the code, writing, and travel adventures passing the review as I sit here in contemplation of what is coming for the new year.

Open Source Edinburgh Meetup - Getting Started with Prometheus Workshop (video)

Last month I was in Edinburgh speaking at the Open Source Edinburgh Meetup about how to get started with Prometheus.

I shared my getting started with Prometheus workshop, which I've been working on for months now, and with a good turnout this group was perfect to test how the workshop lands with new observability engineers.

We were in the offices of Scott Logic (just down the hill from Edinburgh Castle) and below you'll find the agenda, the abstract, and the video recording of my session.

KCD Czech & Slovak 2023: Engaging Your Execs - Telling Great Observability Tales Inspiring Action (slides + video)

Today I spoke at the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) Kubernetes Community Day (KCD) in Bratislava,Slovakia.

I've been to Bratislava in the past to keynote for another conference at the same location and was deeply impressed with the depth of knowledge walking around that university.

WTF is SRE 2023 - Telling Effective Tales About Production (slides + recording)

Spent this week in London at the WTF is SRE 2023 conference sharing some thoughts on how to tell more effective tales in your organization of effect change. 

It was the fourth edition of this event and they  pulled together four tracks; Observability, Reliability, DevEx and DevSecOps. 

You must be asking the same thing I was when I first saw this conference, what is WTF is SRE? Well as they say on their site, "It is a highly-rated, very-tweeted-about, ridiculously-fun, wildly-insightful two-day conference designed to improve the world of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE)."

As you can tell from the tone and style, these have got to be some really fun people to hang out with for a few days, so here's my thoughts and the slides from my talk.

Cloud Native Rejekts 2023 - Observability For You and Me with OpenTelemetry

The Cloud Native Rejekts 2023 is a fun event that is playing off of the main event later in the week, KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Eu. Basically, if your talk was rejected, you can give it here!

This is a bit of a different article than normal in that I was not planning to present at the Cloud Native Rejekts event, but due to late minute cancellation of a speaker on my team, I was slotted in.

The session will be a talk on observability and the open source community project known as OpenTelemetry, a basic introduction to the concepts and technology..

The talk was originally to be given by Paige Cruz, but she's unable to attend so I'm filling her slot. As promised in my talk, the slides are provided below along with the session abstract.

Gumbo Podcast - Your First Steps in Cloud Native Observability

Last week, on 6 Dec 2022, I was invited to share my experiences on the Data Protection Gumbo podcast with its host Demetrius Malbrough and we had a nice chat about my journey into cloud native observability (o11y) since joining Chronosphere.

Red Hat Summit 2021 (Ask the Experts) - An open approach to solution architectures (video)

This year the Red Hat Summit event is a bit different as we bridge the gap from pandemic reality to hopefully a form of normalcy. 

As the Red Hat Summit site explains to us, this "...event is expanding to become an all-new, flexible conference series, consisting of a 2‑part immersive virtual experience as well as a global tour of small-scale, in-person events. This series will create collective opportunities to share experiences, innovations, and insights."

Getting Started with Cloud Native Development on OpenShift Container Platform (video)

After hosting a webinar to kick start developers looking to get hands on with an easy to use Cloud Native developer tool chain, I wanted to share a step-by-step video with you.

The video walks through the use of Red Hat Developers hosted tooling for Red Hat OpenShift Application Runtimes (RHOAR) used to automate the setup of a full cloud native development tool chain.

First you'll use the Launcher to coordinate your setup, then choose a Spring Boot example application, create a git-based project with web hooks to push changes to an OpenShift Container Platform for automated build, test, and deployment using containers.

How to Jump Start Your Career in Open Source (video)

Back in August I spent a week at DevConf.US and got to share a really special story that comes from personal experience while being involved in open source throughout my career.

It's one I've used to open events, as a keynote in various adjusted forms, and as a session like this one. One thing remains the same throughout each telling, it's about sharing how to jump start your career in open source.
It's a very special talk, one that reached out to each and every one of us regardless of your age, the number of years in your job, and most of all, no matter what you are doing right now you'll learn something new. Not many talks promise you that, do they?

3 Pitfalls Everyone Ignores with Microservices (video)

Back in August I spent a week at DevConf.US talking about microservices, specifically about the 3 pitfalls everyone ignores with microservices.

While slides are often nice, there is nothing like being in the room to experience the real story telling around microservice pitfalls. Many are unable to attend specific events so it's really nice when a conference makes that extra effort to record sessions for posting online.

All Things Open 2018 - Lightning Talk on How To Jump Start a Career in Open Source (video)

Last October I was in Raleigh, North Carolina speaking at All Things Open.

I gave a lightning talk on how to jump start a career in open source, in just 6 minutes.

The topic is near and dear to my heart, so as a lightning talk it was fun to promote the full session I gave earlier this Summer in one of the most amazing venues I've ever spoken at.

The talk includes links to the recording of that venue and the complete story I told. After the talk I posted the slides, but we've been waiting on the video recording of the session and it's arrived!
