I'm heading back to my friends in Edinburgh to speak at the Scotland JBug next month.

It's a fun group of people that really seem to enjoy working with open source and JBoss software stacks.

This time around I'm bringing a full hands-on workshop showcasing automation integration using Red Hat Process Automation Manager.

As I mentioned last time around, I was heading back to my friends in Scotland to speak at the JBug Scotland.

Last week it was game on in Edinburgh, where I spent the evening with a fun group of people that really seem to enjoy working with open source, containers and developing in the cloud.

It was a full hands-on workshop showcasing application development in the cloud using containers, JBoss middleware, services, business logic and APIs.

To change it up a bit I thought it might be fun to present not from my pre-configured, tested and working installation on my laptop, but to use an attendees laptop to kick off the first installation of our OpenShift Container Platform.

Imagine the powerful storyline, when a presenter borrows your laptop for the first 30 minutes of the workshop and showcases kicking off installation so easy it works on ANY laptop?

Scotland JBug Recap - An evening of Cloud, Containers, BPM & more

I was lucky enough to be invited back to the Scotland JBug in Edinburgh, Scotland last week.

I always have such a good time with everyone involved here so was more than happy to share my current thoughts and works around BPM, AppDev and Cloud development strategies.

It was a combination of session talks and half workshop based as I provided all the software bits to get you started, even if there would be Internet issues so that you could take it all home and explore it all self-paced.

The attendance was good and we had a good time with the live demos. I started it all off with an overview of my upcoming book and gave a bit of background into how the project started, developed and is progressing.

Then I moved on to showcasing getting a private Cloud up and running with the Red Hat Container Development Kit (CDK) in just minutes. I brought along as much of the software as I could so that those that brought laptops could give it a spin. We had the Red Hat CDK installed in no time and in minutes we even spun up our OpenShift based Cloud so that we had a private PaaS on our laptops.

After a break I showcased the collection on Red Hat Demo Central, all application development examples centered around Red Hat JBoss technologies. Included in the software were the JBoss BRMS and JBoss BPM Suite so that the attendees could install them on their private PaaS and take them for a spin.

London JBug Recap - A night of AppDev and private Cloud

As previously mentioned, I was in London this week and was fortunate enough to be invited by the fun loving London JBug group to speak.

They let me talk about installing a private PaaS in just minutes and I brought along as much of the software as I could so that those that brought laptops could give it a spin. We had the Red Hat CDK installed in no time and in minutes we even spun up our OpenShift based Cloud so that we had a private PaaS on our laptops.

London JBug - Experience the Potential of JBoss Private Cloud

Next month I will be taking a tour through the UK region. As I have often done in the past, I will be stopping to chat with the user groups in Edinburgh, Scotland and London, UK.

I first stopped by in 2011 to talk about jBPM, a community project that is now the product Red Hat JBoss BPM Suite. The second time I was there was in 2014, when I gave a JBoss BPM Suite workshop in the summer, which is always a great time to be in London.

This time around I will be talking about a different area in the Red Hat technology space, namely the Cloud Suite technologies as they relate to application developers. This means how can an application developer interact, leverage and improve their (working) lives with this technology stack.  Not only that, but how can we show this without using a data center or enterprise hosting of this stack as most of us want to experience it locally on our own machines.

With that in mind, partnering with the London JBug, we have put together an evening that included a two staged talk to first lay the ground work on your local machine and then take you off into the Clouds with containerized application development.

This September, we’re delighted to welcome back one of our most popular speakers, Red Hat Technology Evangelist, Eric D. Schabell. Eric is in the UK for a short time and has kindly agreed to present two talks with a focus on realizing the potential of the JBoss private cloud.

Eric shows you a painless way to easily install a private Cloud in just minutes, one that leverages today’s docker-based container technologies from & wrapped in a developer friendly self-service OpenShift platform. JBug Scotland - An evening of Cloud, containers and application development

Over a year ago I was asked and spoke at the JBug Scotland to a great group of people. It was hosted in Edinburg and repeated in Glasgow, met a lot of fun people while showcasing a workshop around JBoss BPM technologies.

Shortly after that event I moved to the US for a year, an experience that is now coming slowly to and end. With that in mind, I was contacted about my return to Europe by my friends in Scotland. They wondered if I would like to revisit?

I am currently in a different evangelist role with a focus on solutions based on the entire Red Hat product portfolio. One thing led to another and we aligned a set of talks that cover a few things I am working on now.

Denmark partner & JBug tour exciting the masses with JBoss Integration & BPM

Last month I wrote about touring the Nordics with a first stop in Denmark this week.

I spent some time with a partner in Aarhus last week where we entertained a room full of integration and BPM enthusiasts.

It started with an overview of the potential of Open Source middleware as Red Hat provides their stack and introduced my session where I took them through rules, event and processes.

We had a good time with this and for the attendees they got the chance to take home a Red Hat remote control airplane that sure put some smiles on their faces when departing the event.

That same evening I then did a full on JBoss BPM workshop for the local Aarhus JBug, located in a neat little back room of a restaurant in the oldest part of town. As you can see in the picture above I had to be careful not to bump my head on the beam running through the ceiling.

The next day was another partner event in Copenhagen where we hosted a more intimate version with a very select group of customers that are actively working on integration and BPM solutions with Red Hat technologies.

It was fun to chat and interact with these customers, gaining insights into their usage scenarios and providing some feedback into the coming product features.

That evening I had the honor of launching the inaugural Copenhagen JBug event, which was hosted at the National Museum!

What a location to host a talk, with art, sculptures and thousands of years of history about the Danish culture all around us.

The group was very enthusiastic and left with a good appreciation for the uses of rules, events and processes.

I also spent time on the Business Resource Planner workshop that is in the works, providing the attendees with some direction on how to get up to speed on this technology too.

JBUG Scotland - JBoss BPM workshop rocked Edinburgh and Glasgow

Last week I spent the better part of my time with some fantastic people that run a JBoss User Group (JBug) in Scotland.

Up to now they have been pushing it pretty hard in Edinburgh, Scotland and with some success as I found out when I showed up with my JBoss BPM workshop.

We had a room full of attendees, a lot of beer and pizza and some great technical hands-on content around JBoss rules, events and processes.

What more could you want?

They got more than their moneys worth as we introduced the concepts, loaded up their machines with JBoss BRMS & JBoss BPM Suite and started building the Cool Store / Rewards projects from scratch.

Most of the event was filmed so expect them to post this soon and will link it back in here when they do.

Edinburgh JBug was packed.

The workshop they followed is available online, so feel free to enjoy the same hands-on experience they did.

After this fine evening I jumped a train to the next major town, Glasgow.

Here we launched the inaugural Glasgow based JBug which was a pretty good event with another full room, showing that they are more than ready to have their very own JBug in Glasgow.

JBUG Scotland - JBoss BPM workshop on tour (Edinburgh & Glasgow)

In early March of this year I have been invited to bring a JBoss BPM workshop to the local Scotland JBUG's in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

I will be taking the attendees through a workshop that is all about getting hands on, so bring your own laptop, as we will embark on building a rules, events and BPM project of your choice.

You can create the JBoss Cool Store or the JBoss HR Employee Rewards process form scratch.

The entire workshop can be installed locally or you can use it online as it is hosted in the Cloud on OpenShift.

With a bit of interest I will also present some details around using xPaaS or bpmPaaS versions to build your applications in the Cloud.

Last week I broke up my summer break with a week in the UK, stopping to chat with customers, partners, provide a few workshops, enjoyed an entertaining evening with the London JBug, and trained up the entire UKI field teams.

It was all about JBoss BRMS & JBoss BPM Suite with a bit of OpenShift sprinkled in as we showcased bpmPaaS where needed.

The first workshop showcases how to build a JBoss BRMS project that leverages rules, a domain specific language (DSL), decision table, and ruleflow.

The second part of the workshop expands your knowledge by teaching you how to design and create a working process with task forms and a data model.

You will create a working HR employee reward process in no time at all.

This has all been put together for you online and was run this week several times to enthusiastic customers, the London JBug members, and the internal field teams from the UKI.

The various groups that attended this workshop did not all have access to laptops that allowed installation and configuration of the JBoss products used in this workshop, so we just provided
bpmPaaS instances on OpenShift.

Everyone was happy, coding away, and learning how darn easy it is to add rules, events and processes to your projects.

Part of the trip involved a ride down into the south of England, where the country was pretty, the sun
was shining, the people were both easy going and proved to be adept at working on rules, events and processes during their workshop.

Feedback on the workshop was fantastic and now you too can enjoy it as we have pushed it into the Cloud on OpenShift, just follow along.

Red Hat JBoss BPM Suite East Coast Tour in the Fall

In a few months I will be dropping in on Java User Groups (JUGs) and JBoss User Groups (JBugs) around the east coast of the USA.

These stops will be to provide JBoss BRMS & BPM Suite workshops that allow you to experience it all first hand, either on a local installation or in the OpenShift Cloud with our bpmPaaS experience.

Boston JUG

First stop will be in Boston for the Boston JUG, a group I have visited before and always enjoy seeing again. The meetup is scheduled for Monday, 8th of September starting at 18:00 hours. The abstract and location are to follow soon though you can bet on it being somewhere in Cambridge as that is where they tend to locate.

DCJBug

The next stop will be in Washington, DC for the DCJBug, a group more specifically targeting JBoss instead of just pure Java. The meetup is scheduled for Tuesday, 9th of September starting at 18:30 hours. Location will be at AEM Herndon Office, 13880 Dulles Corner Lane, Suite 300, Herndon, VA.

This week, as previously reported, we had a pretty special JBUG event in Chicago with all of the JBoss Technology Evangelists in one room for the day.

They forgot to mention that it would be -19C with wind chill bringing it down to -26C.

This made travel into the office for the day long event a challenge but we kicked it off and presented on diverse topics around JEE, JBoss EAP, JBoss BRMS, JBoss BPM Suite, JBoss DV, and JBoss FSW.

The group was allowed to pick the topics they wanted to dig into and were given sets of workshop files to take home for personal use and exploration.

I covered the JBoss BRMS & BPM Suite Primer in a session and then provided them with a small workshop example around golfing.

JBoss User Group (JBUG) Chicago - Workshops with JBoss Evangelists

In a few weeks time, Feb 6th, 2014 in Chicago we will have one of the more special JBUG meetups in a long time. There will be a star studded group of JBoss Evangelists in attendance providing you with a chance to participate in diverse workshops based on JBoss technology.

Eric D. Schabell is the JBoss technology evangelist for Integration and BPM products at Red Hat. He is responsible for various outbound technical aspects of promoting JBoss Enterprise Middleware integration products and services (BRMS/BPM, SOA, and data integration), has traveled the world speaking at conferences and is the author of The OpenShift Primer. Kenny Peeples is a JBoss Technology Evangelist with a focus on Fuse, A-MQ, Data Virtualization, and Fuse Service Works. Previously, Architect in Cloud, Mobile and SOA with Security Focus for Government Agencies such as Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security. Singapore JBUG gets a JBoss BRMS Primer

I was invited to speak last night at the JBoss User Group (JBUG) in Singapore. It was to be a session that was both informative and interactive with hands on demo projects based on my Customer Evaluation and Rewards demo projects.

The crowd was a mix of students, enterprise developers, and even a few customers. I covered the basics around JBoss BRMS, explaining both Rules and BPM aspects. After this we did a hands on installation, both on Unix and Windows based machines, of the Customer Evaluation demo project. The goal being that attendees would head home with two demos on their personal
machines.

After this the attendees went to work installing the Rewards demo project and were challenged by being able to win one of three free copies of my e-book (OpenShift Primer) by being the fastest to get the demo running. They were gone in less than 5 minutes, so consider the mission accomplished.

Of course there were give aways of t-shirts, rubber balls, and stickers for the laptops. The organization put on a nice Asian buffet and the beer was free flowing during the coding. ;-)

I enjoyed meeting all the new faces and interacting with a few of our JBoss BRMS customers that showed up to chat with me during and after my session.

JBUG OWL - the journey begins with JBoss BRMS Primer

This was to be a JBoss Business Rules Management System session, filled with an enlightening live demo to amaze the local JBUG OWL in Germany. It also signals the launch of a new topic in the Primer series.

The promised session was to be my first JBoss BRMS Primer. I have come up with a Primer series after the success of the OpenShift Primer that I took on the road last year and finally turned into an e-book. Here is the abstract of my talk and the slides used with a link to the two demos that were given.

JBoss Business Rules Management System (BRMS) Primer
This session will get you started with JBoss BRMS. It will walk you through some of the capabilities, components and basic concepts that one needs to understand to start building process and rule-driven applications. Join us for an hour or two of Business Process Management (BPM) concepts, explanations of how to capture your enterprises logic in business rules and a demonstration or two from real live processes that bring these concepts to life.

The demos I gave were the JBoss BRMS Customer Evaluation and JBoss BRMS Rewards demos.

The group was very nice, consisting of Java consultants, developers, a few managers, one or two sales and some of the local students braving the bad weather for some snacks, drinks and JBoss technology talks.

It opened with an overview of agile test driven development, which is a topic I understand, but challenged my rather rusty German. This was followed by an quick walk through the JBoss middleware stack, a break and then my session. 

I look forward to working with this group in the future as they were an interested audience and it is a short 3 hour drive through the beautiful German country side for me. Stay tuned, we are working on a follow up session later this year! ;)

JBoss year in review 2012

This has been quite a year for me, with a big jump to a new adventure from JBoss Solution Architect in the Benelux region to JBoss Technology Evangelist (JTE) in the JBoss Middleware Business Unit.

I could not be happier since making this move. I have been able to get a lot done for the field that I was not able to do like demos, howto blogs and more.

Writing

I love to write. It is that simple. I have been lucky enough to find time to write on all kinds of projects this year. Blogging was a big theme with seventy five (75) articles in 2012. You can find the JBoss content here, on dzone.com and over at howtojboss.com. I have joined with Java Code Geeks site and was invited as a DZone MVB which means both sites republish content from my blog. I have published several articles at JAX online, several over at Computable.nl and a book called OpenShift Primer at DeveloperPress.com. I also lined up a Chinese translator and you will find links at the bottom of my articles that direct you to a translation.

I even found some time to work on a novella and a few short stories are in the works as I write this, all non-technical in nature. A writer writes, everything!

Cycling
This year we got our first ever Red Hat / JBoss branded cycling gear. I logged over 2k km in places like the Veluwe, Limburg, Belgium and even participated in the ALS tour for a good cause (106km in 4,5 hours)!

I finally split out my tweeting on cycling to a new account @RedHatCycling, check it out if you want to keep up on my adventures on two wheels.
